To understand the Precession of the Great Year we need to start with some basics. The Precession of the equinox is a 24,000 to 26,000 year cycle called a Great Year. We will be calling it 24,000 years. This is the time it takes the earth to complete a 360 degree wobble tracing a circle in the heavens. The phenomenon of the wobble is that it moves us backwards through the zodiac as we change Ages. For example we are approaching the Age of Aquarius while leaving the Age of Pisces. The next Age will be Capricorn. It is called the Precession of the Equinox because the equinox points, where our sun meets our equator twice a year, are how ancient sky gazers tracked our location in the heavens. Due to the earth's wobble the equinoxes slowing change location, they precess backwards. For example, the spring equinox used to occur in Aries, and is the reason that it is the first sign of the zodiac, but the spring equinox now occurs in Pisces. "Ages" are designated when the sun rises on the horizon in that constellation. Ages lasts approximately 2,000 to 2,150 years, the time it takes the sun to precess through that constellation. The reason these years vary is because the Precession is not a constant as it speeds up and slows down, and some constellations are larger while others are smaller. Quite frankly, no one knows for sure how long an Age will last.
During this wobble there are times when the North Pole is pointed it's most extreme towards the galactic center or pointed its most extreme away from it. Pointed towards it ushers in Golden Ages as earth and its inhabitants bask in the "sweet influence" issuing forth from the galactic center. This Age is our spiritual Garden of Eden. Pointed away from our "source" marks our Dark Ages and is our fall from grace, the Fall of Man. The Vedas called the Dark Ages Kali Yuga, a time during which man is behest by materialism, crime, famine, afflictions, war and physical and mental illness. Sound familiar?
The Golden Ages are called Satya Yuga, a time during which mankind enjoys longevity, expanded consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. Does that sound familiar? I didn't think so. The Greeks broke the Great Year of golden and dark ages into four metals; iron, bronze, silver and gold. The Hindu also broke the Great Year into stages of four and these are, the Satya Yuga (Golden Age), the Treta Yuga, the Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga (Dark Age). No one is certain what Age we are in today but it is believed that the North Pole is currently pointed away from the Galactic Center. The condition of society is self evident that we are far from any Golden Age. Hospitals are full of the physically and mentally ill and greed and corruption is epidemic in all areas of society - worldwide. Remember, technology does not equal spirituality or enlightenment. That would be like saying aliens (if they exist) would automatically be ethically and morally superior.
The Milky Way galaxy is spun out like a plate with spiraling arms. Our solar system, the sun and all its planets, sits on one of these arms as we all slowly move above and below its dense magnetic plane at the same time that the earth is doing its 24,000 year wobble. We make only two of these galactic plane crossings during the Great Year, being approximately 12,000 years apart. It so happens that our two crossings, either moving above or below the galactic plane, coincides with the North Pole pointing away from or towards the galactic center. Our current galactic plane crossing has our North Pole pointed away from the galactic center. It is believed we began this crossing in 1998 and according to the Maya long count calendar the sun will align with the galactic center during the winter solstice of December 21, 2012. Futurist and intuitive, Gordon-Michael Scallion, in production of his Future Map of the World, predicted cataclysmic floods and rising sea levels to begin in 1998 inundating coastlines and changing the face of the planet. 1998 was about the time that we began seeing major climate changes which is becoming more evident in its extremes as we near 2012, and will likely continue well beyond that date.
The equinox mark the shortest day and longest night of the year before the days begin to lengthen again. Symbolically, it is the death and rebirth of the sun. Most cultures have recognized this as a time of a rebirth involving holidays, festivals, and gatherings. It is the christmas season that celebrates the birth of Christ, the son. The daylight hours continue to increase until the June summer solstice, which marks the longest day and shortest night of the year and the cycle begins again. The equinoxes mark the time when the length of day and length of night are equal (equinox).
The winter and summer solstice occurs when the sun's position in the sky reaches its northern most and southern most extremes. Apparently, there is a bounce to the whole universe.
An ancient Hermetic philosophy states that the microcosm reflects the macrocosm as in the principal of, "as above, so below," or on "earth as it is in heaven". For example, let's call our annual winter and summer solstice and the spring (vernal) and autumn equinoxes are the microcosm of our descending and ascending seasons. Then the macrocosm of our descending and ascending Ages is when the sun and its solar system moves north and south of the galactic plane while the earth itself draws a 360 wobble. Again, during this wobble the earth has its North Pole tilted towards or away from what is sometimes referred to as the cosmic or galactic sun, the center of the Milky Way galaxy. We have microcosmic seasons here on earth while our solar system has its own macrocosmic seasons called Ages (Dark or Golden).
More significantly, our 2012 crossing is a microcosmic death of the Sun (winter solstice) converging with a macrocosmic death of the Sun. Metaphorically, let's hope not literally, the sun will die, be crucified upon the cross. This event marks the end of our Kali Yuga, or Dark Age. We will now slowly ascend towards a Golden Age, Satya Yuga, as our North Pole turns back towards the galactic center, our cosmic sun. Unfortunately, it will take 12,000 years of the earth's wobble for the North Pole to point directly towards the galactic center where a summer solstice will coincide with our next galactic crossing. One crossing has the North Pole pointed away (dark), while the other has it pointed towards (Golden).
Metaphorically, our macrocosmic long dark winter ends as the sun dies on the cross and is born again. The North Pole then begins its ascension toward the galactic center. That's one crossing. Unfortunately, both crossings are marred by earth changes and cataclysms as one also occurs at the end of the Golden Age.
The Maya called the galactic plane the dark rift referring to the thick, spun out accumulation of interstellar dust in the densest region of the arm's center. This region is considered to be the galactic equator and there is a magnetic reversal inherent to being North or South, equivalent to being North or South of the earth's equator. For example, tornados and hurricanes rotate counterclockwise north of the earth's equator while they rotate clockwise south of the equator. While sitting upon our equator a compass spins wildly. What this portends for our entire solar system is any man's guess.
Unfortunately, 2012 coincides with our sun's solar maximum period which has its own 11 year cycle at the same time that earth's protective magnetic field is weakening, a factor believed to portend a pole reversal. Magnetic field reversals have occurred in the past as confirmed in earth's geological records, although what caused them is unclear. NASA scientists are now observing changes in the direction of earth's magnetic field. Their website features a map showing the gradual northward migration of the north magnetic pole in the past century and a half. Is this shift intrinsic, related to our core, or extrinsic related to outer factors?
The Golden Ages are said to be a time of spiritual transformation, our very DNA being recoded. Man is telepathic and he lives for hundreds of years, disease being almost nonexistent. He is able to conceive all the mysteries of the Universe. Legendary gateways to the gods are opened and they once again walk among man (is this when we are closer to our binary star, believe by some to be Sirius-Isis)? It is also very possible that the lemniscate symbol (8 on its side) references our Sun's elliptical path, turned at a 33 degree angle, with the center being its crossing points of the galactic plane.
Unfortunately, the Golden Age does not last for the earth continues its wobble and our sun continues upon its elliptical path moving us farther away from the galactic center. Man again begins his slow decline into the barbaric Dark Ages with dim, unbelievable tales and legends of a once Golden Age. Sacred Science regarding the cyclic nature of mankind's destruction and rebirth will again be entrusted to the hands of mystics for safekeeping only to be shared with the deserving initiate, considered to be the brilliant minds among us.
